The story: Marisa notices glowing cherry blossoms pass her window at the same time that Sakuya leaves the SDM in order to investigate. Both make their way to the shrine and join up with Reimu, who is simply tired of how cold it is. The three begin wandering aimlessly to target any suspicious youkai or possible causes. After Sakuya immediately shoots down an over-eager Cirno, the group runs into Letty White, who is quickly defeated. Seeing nothing in the vicinity of the Shrine or the Human Village, the group then heads toward Youkai Forest and Youkai Mountain to investigate. After getting lost in a snowstorm, the three find themselves in Mayohiga, with Marisa commenting that the atmosphere feels similar to being near the shrine's border at night, a suspicious statement as Reimu comments that Marisa never stays over at the Shrine. Chen appears and greets the group, attempting to scare them by stating they can't leave. She quickly starts trying to kick them out once Reimu decides to start looting the place. After defeating Chen, the group leaves Youkai Mountain and heads back to Magic Forest in order to pick something up from Marisa's house. Along the way, the group is ambushed by a horde of dolls, and eventually finds Alice is the one behind the ambush. Alice is quickly defeated and when asked about the long winter, she responds by jokingly suggesting that Reimu stole it all. She gives the group a hint that the cherry blossoms appear to be moving somewhere and that the group should follow them to the culprit. Taking that advice, the group eventually arrives at the Netherworld Gate near Youkai Mountain, and they are briefly stymied by the immovable gate. Soon, the Prismrivers arrive and inform the group that they should not proceed. Upon being challenged, the Prismrivers put on a performance while the group observes and dodges. Once the performance is finished, Reimu and Sakuya fly over the gate while Marisa puzzles over how to actually open it, before being informed the gate does not open anyway. Once in the Netherworld, the group notes that they appear to be surrounded by ghosts. Upon arriving at the foot of stairs of Hakugyokurou, the group notices Youmu at the top of the stairs, waiting for them. She demands that the group hand over their collected spring to her, and challenges them to a duel upon their refusal. During the duel, Marisa notes the similarities between Youmu and Sakuya, much to Reimu's confusion. Upon her defeat, Youmu decides to lead the group to the Ayakashi in the hopes that Yuyuko will win and get the spring instead. When the group encounters Yuyuko, she offers Marisa a job and mentions the flower viewing will begin soon. However, she bars entry for the group because they still have not been invited. Eventually, a duel begins with the entirety of the loser's spring as the wager. During the duel, Yuyuko shows off the effect and how to create a Supernatural Border, which Marisa begins spamming immediately for fun. Eventually, Reimu and Sakuya question what happens to the spring used in each barrier just in time for the seal on the Ayakashi to break from the spring released from Marisa's borders. Yuyuko momentarily loses interest in the duel when she realizes the person she's trying to revive is herself, and the exterminators begin working to try and reseal the tree. Marisa distracts Yuyuko in order to allow Reimu to start sealing, and Yuyuko gives up before the tree is resealed, realizing the unsealed tree would probably kill her. Spring eventually returns, with the residents of the SDM and Hakugyokurou visiting the shrine a week later.
Before leaving, Yuyuko mentions that the barrier between the Netherworld and Gensokyo that Reimu broke is still broken, and that a consultant was visiting the Netherworld at the moment. She asks the exterminators to go meet the consultant and find out why it's taking so long. After arriving in the Netherworld, the group meets and defeats Chen again, and runs into Ran. Upon defeating her, they learn that her mistress is the consultant that is mentioned, and that she was sleeping for that night. The next night, the group returns to defeat Ran again and encounter Yukari, who promises to fix the barrier at some point. Before allowing the group to leave, Yukari decides to test the group, specifically Reimu, lecturing them about the proper duties of a shrine maiden and youkai exterminators.
The bonus song is a remix of Yukari, Yuyuko, and Youmu's themes by Komeiji Records. It narrates a conversation between the three in Hakugyokurou after Yukari's encounter with the group, and ends with Yuyuko asking whether Yukari will ever get around to fixing the broken border.
